Some people, learning that I had pretended to be a woman, said something like, “big deal, that’s been done before.” But do people realize how old this hoax is?

Back in 1722, when Benjamin Franklin was only 16, he also wanted people to read what he wrote, but no one would publish anything written by a 16 year old boy. So he wrote a series of essays under the pen name of “Silence Dogood,” pretending he was a woman. His essays became a big hit in Boston.

So you see, even 283 years ago, people pretended they were women in order to get others to read what they wrote.

As I never really read LG until the hoax was revealed I'm not exactly a qualified expert---but I think the new format is catching on...

The Benjamin Franklin did it too line is a cop out. First, writing for newspapers under assumed identities was a common and accepted practice at the time, no one would have heartburn with it. Second, the assumed identities could be either male or female, again a normal and common thing, at the time. Second, Franklin became an established and brilliant contributor and printer in his own right, under his own name. One can argue, successfully I think, that Franklin was the forerunner of today's blogger.

What Franklin did is not the same as posing as a woman and then claiming that women have it easy. Try reading The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin for some insight into him.
