Trackback etiquette

I get annoyed when people leave me trackbacks, and then I look at the post and it contains no link to my blog!

This is an abuse of the trackback system, and I'm in complete agreement with Jacob Grier on this one. He writes:

What are trackbacks for? They're for letting bloggers and readers know that you've linked to them, providing an easy way for people to find the commentary and reactions to a post that piques their interest. They're not for shameless self-promotion ...

The offending blogger tried to claim that it's OK to send a trackback ping if your post is "about the same subject."

The problem is that what constitutes the "same subject" can be pretty vague. You could write a post about George Bush,and then send trackback pings to 100 other posts about George Bush.

Requiring an actual link to the pinged post creates a bright line rule of etiquette that's much easier to adjudicate.

I don't care about the traffic a link might bring me, but it is common human respect to put my link if they trackback me. This one blog has done it to me several times and I don't want to offend them and tell them what they are doing, but it really pisses the pants off of me. Great post.

I almost always trackback only when I make a direct comment about the post in my post (and of course then include a link). Every once in a while I'll trackback just on the basis of a hat tip, but I'm not even sure about that.

At some point I may have accidentally pinged somebody w/o having a link up, but in general that does seem like an abuse of the trackback system.
