Pet cloning

We see in today’s WaPo that animal rights activists are “seeking state and federal restrictions on the small but growing pet-cloning industry.”

This article demonstrates that whatever activity you might dream of, someone wants to bring the government in and regulate it.

I don’t see how animal cloning causes any harm to the public.

Animals are not people, and any “harm” caused to animals by cloning companies is tiny compared to the vast number of animals killed for food and for non-cloning related scientific research.

Furthermore, commercial cloning will help to advance mankind’s knowledge of biology. Cloning companies will hone their techniques, and there will be a large pool of cloned animals available for study.

I personally wouldn’t pay $32,000 to clone a pet, but rich people have been known to spend money on dumber stuff than that.

This technology may end up being a big boon to the world. Imagine taking a DNA sample of a young dog. You could then safely neuter the dog an let it live out it's whole life before deciding whether or not the animal was good enough to pass it's DNA on to the next generation. You could breed a dog that died years ago to a dog of this generation. You could breed for long life, breed out hip joint defects, breed the perfect seeing eye dog, or the very best search and rescue dog.

A child isn't a simple product of flesh and bone, but instead a creation of the moment to moment experiences, feelings, drawings, birthdays, hospital visits, cartoons, hugs, kisses, sunshine, crying and laughing... the memories.

Trying to clone a lost child would be a horrible thing for both the parents AND the cloned child.

(Any parent f'd up enough to want to clone their lost child would be f'd up enough to lay a guilt trip on the new child for not being like 'Gary' or whatever)

I say this not in theory, but as a parent of 3 wonderful children. Nothing or nobody could ever replace them if I were to lose one of my kids. The thought that some people think they could do so through simply cloning the flesh is disturbing.
