You're right. The land was a lot better off before the first Asians crossed the Bering Strait. On the other hand, there is no doubt that immigration helps the people of America and the immigrants who become Americans immensely.

It's not really very libertarian to restrict immigration, is it?

I mean, shouldn't people have the right to go where they want? If companies decide that they'd rather hire Mexicans than Americans, shouldn't they be allowed, on libertarian principles, to do so?

And as for Bush looking handsome, all I have to say is, can I share some of whatever you're smoking?

I don’t believe that immigration benefits America.

I'm curious: Why would you believe that? Every new human being brought into our country is, at the very least, another pair of hands to add to the labor force. So, obviously, immigration benefits us by adding to our supply of labor.

And that's ignoring any contributions to our knowledge base and culture that immigration brings.

Oh we gots plenty o' that.

What immigration brings is cheap labor, which means bigger profit margins.

Which is why I (non-snarkily) remarked up there that I was surprised to hear LG come out against it.

Perhaps she is much more of a statist than are most libertarians.

In other late-breaking news, Brett Favre has been the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons, Americans landed on the moon, and 2+2=4.

What a privilege it is to be on the hip, cutting edge! Where we dare to tell the truth, whatever the consequences!

You know LG, you saw through the Oprah moment, but hey, that huge audience she has that is glued to the TV every day didn't. And that is why they had it (of course, that's assuming the worst and it wasn't scripted, rehearsed, and choreographed).

Yes, when you have the world's only superpower who can reach across continents with 1 airplane or 100,000 soldiers and knock off any country on the planet, there are certain nations who only understand force of arms that suddenly pay a lot of attention.

The Palestinian leader has certainly taken a different tact lately. I doubt the struggle to eradicate the Jews is off the table, but if the English and Arab words finally match when he talks to different audiences (Yassar Arafat was famous for them NOT matching), makes you wonder what the plan is now.

Libertarian Girl

I'm a pro-U.S. libertarian. I support what's in our country's best interests.

Lawsuits hurt the economy? Hey, you want to live in a world where people can break contracts, make shoddy and unsafe products, and walk around unpunished for negligent acts that hurt or kill people, be my guest. Me, I like a system where, if I'm hurt, I can insure that I'm compensated for my injury by the person RESPONSIBLE for my injury.

But that's just me.

Nick Schandler

"I agree with Bush that lawsuits hurt the economy..."

What do you mean by this? Do you mean *all* lawsuits "hurt the economy" or are you talking only specifically about "frivolous" lawsuits?

Also, I too would like to hear your opinions on immigration.

"I don’t believe that immigration benefits America."

You know sometimes, LG, you say things that simply boggle the mind. They are so outlandish that I cannot believe you actually mean them - that you are more than likely just typing them with this gleam in your eye and the thought, "Man, this will really get them riled up!"

At least I hope that is what you are thinking - because the alternative is spooky.

Legal immigration built this country - it made it the great nation that it is. It's ILLEGAL and unrestrained immigration that is the killer.

Oh, and I can fully understand why you would be annoyed by being lectured on morals.
